As many of you know, the Tamiya Tiger I and King Tiger (sharing the same gearboxes) both are too fast out of the box for scale-speed tanking.  I had run my King Tiger stock for quite some time with the stock configuration, but had to limit my top speed for Battledays by using my radio's end point adjustment on the throttle.  This, of course, limits the amount of throw you have for your throttle range and also handicaps you when battling since, as you take hits, your speed and torque are reduced by the Tamiya battle system electroincs.  The answer, as many have found, is to add gear reductions in conjuction with the stock gearboxes.  I looked at the usual e-tailers and found that most cost about $100 for two gear reductions, enough to do one tank.  These gear reductions also were usually limited in the gears that could be placed on the output shaft, which confines the tankers options in gearing to just changing the pinion gear on the motor itself.  While searching for a (cheap) way to get my Tamiya King Tiger down to scale speed, I wondered if I could come up with a cheaper option myself.

The reasons for this attempt were that:  1) I have a very limited budget for my tank addiction, er....hobby  2) I wanted to be able to use different gear options so that I could "dial-in" the desired scale speed.

The first step was to find some readily available (and cheap!) gear reductions.  I chose some gear reductions made by a company named Maxx Products Intl.  These gear reductions offer a ratio of around 3:1  and are made for electric R/C planes utilizing 380-size motors.  These gear reductions also come with three pinions for the motor in tooth-sizes of 10, 12 and 14 giving the tanker more options for gearing.  You can get these in the US from MPI (Maxx Products Intl.) and they cost $25 EACH before shipping @ www.maxxprod.com.  I, however, chose to look on Ebay and was able to get two shipped for a total of $24!  I have since bought two more from this seller (plus2_rc) for the same price.
