2009 "H*E*A*T Fall Open" Here are some photos of the R/C tank event in November, 2009 at the AAF Tank Museum in Danville. The biggest news out of this event was the large turnout of KV-1 heavy tanks! For the first time we were able to see an entire platoon of these Soviet monsters in battle. Below, Eric, Will, James and Marty face off against the rest of us: Will's tank, in the foreground, has a really nice camo job. And in the background, you can see the realistic sagging of the metal tracks look on Eric's pre-Tamiya KV-1: More photos...
The H*E*A*T event was held in conjunction with the annual indoor car show at the museum. Here, a glossy Chevy truck stands in contrast to a WWII Panzer Mark IV: Hundreds of people attended the car show. And we gave them demonstrations of R/C tanks as they visited the battlefield. Here's another shot of the classic cars, this time in front of the ill-fated Sergeant York flak tank: Randy and Doug put together four IR land mine prototypes for use on the battlefield. Check out this inexpensive way to protect the electronics! These boxes were hidden in buildings and trees: Speaking of Randy and Doug, this time Randy got the honor of riding in the commander's cupola as Doug drove the 50 ton M60A2. They crushed cars and wide-screen TV's...(I have a cool video to come soon!): Here is one of James' gear reductions that are responsible for my Sherman run well on the battlefield. This little part finally makes my heavy Jumbo moveable after taking damage. In fact, now I can climb a 45 degree hill after taking 8 hits! So no more "Mr. Pillbox" for me! James ran his fast British Cromwell tank this weekend. It's a cool addition to the every-widening range of tanks on the field: The giant turret has incredible speed! And with a "fan-ban" apple installed, this zippy modern tank was very difficult to hit in battle! ![]() Another cool tank Eric fielded at Danville was this WWI light tank. It was a trip to see this tiny thing out there fighting with giant King Tigers! ![]() The event was a lot of fun. I hate that only ten of us were available to play in Danville this weekend, but I hope a bunch more guys can make plans to join us for the next 3-day battle in March of 2010. "Thank you" to Doug, Karen and all the AAF Museum staff for once again making us feel welcome. And a personal thanks to James for all the help with my new digital radio! Also, the final kill counts have been tallied. Check out the results. |
