"3rd Annual Winter H*E*A*T Fun Run" 10:00 am - 5:00 pm, January 3, 2009Join us for a 1-day fun run with unique types of battles and no inspections. Bring your tanks and a sense of fun! We will keep things moving fast since it is a short day and we want to maximize stick-time wherever possible. Many game ideas that were popular the past two years have returned! Such as "The Tank Olympics" and of course, "Team Death Match"! This time we will try a "Capture the Flags" scenario like they do out West. And time permitting, we can try new ideas that visiting tankers may suggest!
Some Quick Answers: WHAT: "Winter H*E*A*T Fun Run"
WHY: An R/C tank convention to celebrate a terrific year of events and look ahead to the coming year.
WHEN: 10:00 am to 5:00 pm on Saturday, January 3, 2009.
WHERE: AAF Tank Museum in Danville, Virginia.
WHO: Local R/C tankers, and anyone else who can make it! COST: Only $10.00 for AAF Tank Museum members, $20.00 for non-members. GUESTS: A wife or child not running tanks is free, (but hobby friends and newbie tankers need to pay). TANKS: Any 1/15th, 1/16th scale radio control AFV with the Tamiya Battle System, (or compatible system).
RULES: No particular restrictions on tank types or combat styles! Once on the battlefield, "gentleman's rules of driving" apply. As always, please practice safe Frequency Control so you don't step on someone's channel, (and remember, the museum prohibits radios using R/C aircraft frequencies). WEATHER: Bring a small electric heater for your workbench, (check with Doug before plugging in). The last two years we did not even need them! GOAL: A chance for winter stick time, tech chat, and low-stress fun! R.S.V.P.: If you can attend, please e-mail us.
General Battle Scenario Notes for the Winter Fun Run: - The early battles will start even if some stragglers have not arrived yet. So get set up as soon as you can...it's only a one-day event! Try to save your tech chat for the long lunch period.
- All battles will be "teams from a hat" style, which means names will be drawn and Axis or Allied flags will be handed out. This will insure a good mix of veterans and "newbies" on each side. Plus, guys from different clubs will get a chance to team up together. We are striving for EVEN SIDES to make the contests more exciting!
- All games are won by the "last team standing", (unless otherwise noted), and there will be no dedicated judges or referees. Fight hard, fight fair, respect each other.
- These battles are for fun. If we need to adjust rules, setups, scheduling, etc., we will do so "on the fly" in order to maximize stick-time or to make engagements more challenging.
- Gentlemans' rules generally apply. Don't do something you would not want to have done to you. Basic safety rules apply...(railroad ties, bridge railings, and the dry river bed are off limits; try to respect the 3 foot guideline). And remember, the public may be watching, so watch your language.
Order of Events for the Winter Fun Run: 9:00 -10:00 am Gates are open to tankers The side gate will be opened early and tankers are welcome and encouraged to arrive early and set up for the day's events. Fill out a brief event registration form and pay a $10.00 (or $20.00) fee for each tanker in your party, (and no need to pay a visitor's fee at the front desk). There is no tank inspection, but before you turn on your tank, please register the frequency of your radio and get a pin. 10:00 am - The Museum Opens to Visitors 9:30 - 10:00 am Warm-up Combat: "Restricted Zone Battles" Classic "team battles", except certain bridges will be blocked by static vehicles in order to force a melee in one tight spot. Teams and starting points will be selected at random. Since random starting point may put someone in immediate peril, we will allow 15 seconds for tanks to "redeploy" to safer positions or to rendezvous with partners. 10:00 - 11:00 am "Around the World" Battles This is based on Doug's idea to have fire teams battle from one zone to the next around the entire battlefield. Pairs of tankers will take turns on offense and each of the 4 zones will have two stationary defenders. Once the offensive fire team advances into the next available zone, the defenders in the previous zone can no longer fire. The winner is the fire team that makes it all the way "Around the World" alive...and in the shortest time. 11:00 -12:00 pm "Team Death Match!" A team battle that runs for 30 minutes!!! All tanks have unlimited "respawns" after getting killed. You are allowed to change your battery, fix a thrown track or take your tank off the field for other reasons, but that counts as a death too. Every time your tank is killed or removed from the field, you must put a check mark by your team name on a marker board. You can then walk your tank to any corner zone and restart while there is time remaining. The team with the fewest number of respawns listed on their board at the end wins the match! Don't worry about "campers" or snipers, because they will be bowled over by the non-stop combat action! (At 11:30, for interested folks, we will collect money and place an order for pizza to be delivered). 12:00 - 1:30 - Lunch People are encouraged to eat in Museum lobby. If weather is nice, we will eat at tables in the sunshine outside the battlefield building! Orders will be collected for pizza delivery, (or you are welcome to go out for lunch). In any case, this is a good time to get caught up on tech talk and review the latest in tank mods and cool gear with your buddies. 1:30 - 2:30 pm "The 1944 Tank Olympics" What if there was a truce in WWII but Generals still wanted to prove who's best?! We will divide up into "countries" and the one with the best overall times will win the gold medal! We will place stationary "target tanks" at various positions on the battlefield. You must score a hit on each of these tanks in as little time as you can, then drive back to the starting point. (Note: to normalize for tank performance, we will divide your score by the top speed of your tank, and all tanks be set as "heavies" with 9 second shots). 2:30 - 3:30 pm "Capture the Flags - DAK Style!" This scenario is inspired by our counterparts in the Arizona desert! Just like the guys in DAK Club, we will position numerous flags around the battlefield that must be run over and "captured" before your team can advance on the objective. The objective is a command tank that is hull-down in the rock quarry. Each team will get to play offense and defense to determine an overall victor. Time permitting, we will try a variation where both teams have a command objective to defend while being on the offensive. 3:30 - 4:00 pm "Willy's Tank Recovery Battles" When your tank gets knocked out you can get picked up by an RC flatbed truck and returned to the vehicle recovery area. Each team will get a truck and each player will get one "respawn". Once your tank is recovered, you can reboot the TBS and place your tank at any starting point to rejoin the battle. 4:00 - 5:00 pm "Super Team Death Match" A bodacious rematch! This time the gameplay stops at 60 minutes! Unlimited respawns after death. (You are allowed to change batteries or repair thrown tracks, but it still counts as a death). Before you restart your tank each time, you need to put a check mark under your name on a marker board. The team with the fewest respawns listed on their board wins the match! No time for camping or sniping...it all comes down to bold movements and aggressive team coordination. Communicate and make plans with your allies. This is the last Danville tank battle for the rest of the Winter! So fight like there's no tomorrow! 5:00 Museum Closes to Visitors. 5:00 - 5:30 pm CLEAN UP THE FIELD, PACK UP THE GEAR, AND GET OUT THE DOOR If we all pitch in, it should be quick and easy. 5:30 pm Optional: Dinner Gathering at a local restaurant before heading home. 7:00 - 9:00 pm Optional: Night Battles Doug is open to having more battles after dinner. We will take a vote on this at 5:00 pm to see how many want to return for more. Happy New Year!!! |
